Postural Analysis

Posture is the position or attitude of the body or bodily parts that requires minimum muscular energy to maintain mechanically efficient function of the joints with musculoskeletal balance.  Good posture is body alignment that prevents injury and meets the demands made upon it throughout a lifetime.  Optimal posture occurs when the line of gravity falls vertically thru key anatomical landmarks of the body.

These anatomical landmarks are:

  • external auditory meatus (ear)
  • acromiom (shoulder)
  • S2 (low back)
  • slightly posterior to the hip joint
  • anterior to the midline of the knee joint but posterior to the patella
  • anterior to the lateral malleolus (ankle)

Some common misalignments include:

  • Kyphosis – head forward, rounding shoulders
  • Lordosis – large curve in back, bum sticking out
  • Scoliosis – curved spine

Our trainers are educated in performing thorough posture examinations using the Posture Grid, Posture analysis software and goniometer to determine any posture imbalances and develop an appropriate individual program to correct these imbalances.
